Primers in coating systems

25 October 2022

Coating materials have 2 functions:

·       • protective (against alkalis, weathering, mechanical impacts, etc.);

·       • decorative.

A coating system is a combination of layers of sequentially applied coating materials for various purposes.

The primer layer is the very first layer that is in contact with the surface painted later. The primer should protect the surface from the negative influence of environmental factors, as well as from peeling, provide adhesion, that is, adhesion with subsequent layers that will be applied over it, and in the case of priming a mineral surface, strengthen it. It can be said that the primer acts as a buffer between the surface and the layers that will be applied over it.

Primers - are:

·       suspension (a mixture of substances where the solid substance is distributed in the form of tiny particles in a liquid substance in a suspended (non-settled) state) of pigments and fillers in a solution or emulsion of a film-forming binder;

·       solution or emulsion in a solution or emulsion of a film-forming binder.

Priming is the process of applying primer.

Primers differ from coloring compositions in their lower content of pigments.

Primers for mineral surfaces (brick, plaster, concrete, cinder block, aerated concrete, etc.) are also called penetrating or reinforcing primers.

The main task of a penetrating primer is to strengthen the mineral substrate before applying the paint, to bind fine dust particles, and to equalize the absorbency.

Products of Hungarian Silicones used for priming the surface:

Unisil SL 90/99; SL 90/80; SL 90/10 solutions of octyltriethoxysilane with a catalyst.

Unisil SL 90/99; SL 90/80; SL 90/10 have the following properties:

·       increase paint adhesion to the surface;

·       penetrate deeply into the pores of the material and do not clog them, so the materials retain their natural properties - porosity and vapor permeability, that is, they can "breathe";

·       possible to apply on a damp surface;

·       do not change the appearance of the processed material;

·       prevent efflorescence on brickwork;

·       reduce the capillary water absorption of the treated surfaces, resulting in increased frost resistance and retained thermal insulation properties of materials, as well as preventing the development of mold and moss.
